1901 census...Harry [9] was at Dullingham Road, Woodditton with his father [50], Stockman on Farm, born Stetchworth; his mother Sarah Ann [49], born Dullingham; brothers William [26] a stockman, born Stetchworth; Charles [22] a carter, born Stetchworth; George [17] gardener, born Stetchworth and Robert [15] a carter born Stetchworth, and his sisters Julia [13] born Stetchworth and Mary Ann [11] born Dullingham. 1911 census...Harry [18] a laundry machine hand, was at Thorpe Cottage, Grafton Street (Black Bear Lane), Newmarket with his parents (father now a brick layers labourer); brother Robert now a golf links keeper; and sisters Julia and Mary who were both Laundry maids. 2 children had died. |

Harry enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds on 17th March 1916. His sole legatee, his mother Sarah. On the 25th May the Sherwood Foresters took over the trenches in Lievin by the Bois de Riaumont from the 5th Leicesters. On the 3rd June there was a working party in the Bois de Riaumont where an advance trench was being dug for an assembly position for the 138th Brigade. 1 officer was killed but no OR casualties are given. 7 others of the 1st/6th Battalion died with Harry that day, 4 are buried in Fosse No.10 Communal cemetery near him, and 3 are at Noeux-les-Mines Communal cemetery. |
